What art once was for me, is no longer.
This whole process of making art has transformed. It became an essential part of making that I learned to use photographic images not as metaphors or similes, but as tools for conveying a message. Rather than dramatic music and flashing lights I learned to use subtlety and elegance. These might be the keys to fine art success, yet they seem sort of a hazard when on a deadline. Work like this is deeply thought out. One does not make work of this kind by creating and then applying a suitable meaning. It is foolish to think one can have conviction for a body without reading and writing and most importantly thinking. This does not mean to imply that great ideas cannot happen by mere accident. Of course they can. In fact, great ideas unintentionally happen all around us everyday, but it takes the keen and practiced eye to notice them. One must know great art to recognize it and where the potential of it exists. This is why art school is a thing. If there is anything we learn in these four years it is how to think. Yes, we acquire many technical skills, but what is the worth of them in a fine art world if we cannot put those skills into perspective?
